What to Wear to a Pole Dancing Class: Beginner’s Guide
Share
Starting pole dancing is exciting, but many beginners have the same question before their first lesson: what should I wear to a pole dancing class?
The best outfit is comfortable, close-fitting and allows enough skin contact with the pole. You do not need an elaborate costume for your first class. Simple shorts and a fitted top are usually enough to begin.
Why does pole dance clothing matter?
Pole dancing often requires direct contact between your skin and the pole. This contact helps you maintain grip during spins, positions and transitions. Clothing that covers too much of the legs, waist or arms may make some movements more difficult.
Your outfit should also allow you to move freely without constantly needing to adjust it. Close-fitting clothing helps your instructor see your alignment and makes it easier for you to understand how your body moves.
What should you wear to your first pole dancing class?
For a first class, choose fitted shorts with a comfortable waistband and a sports bra, crop top or close-fitting athletic top. The shorts should allow the inner thighs and backs of the knees to make contact with the pole.
Avoid very loose tops, wide trousers and slippery fabrics. Loose clothing can move during spins or inversions, while long leggings may reduce the skin contact needed for certain beginner movements.
A pole dance bodysuit can also be a practical choice. Bodysuits stay close to the body, create a coordinated look and generally remain in place during movement. Choose a design that gives you sufficient freedom around the hips, shoulders and legs.
Should beginners wear shorts or leggings?
Shorts are usually the most practical choice for a standard pole dancing class because they provide useful skin contact. Cycling shorts may work for introductory movements, but shorter fitted shorts can become helpful as you progress.
Leggings can be suitable for warm-ups, conditioning sessions or choreography that does not require much contact with the pole. For a regular pole technique class, bring shorts even if you arrive wearing leggings.
What should you wear for floorwork?
Floorwork places more emphasis on movements performed on or close to the floor. For these classes, you may want to add knee pads to your outfit. Choose a slim, flexible pair that stays in place without restricting your movement.
Fishnet tights can create a striking exotic pole look, but they may change the amount of grip you have against the pole or floor. Check the class description and ask your instructor if you are unsure what is appropriate.
Do you need pole heels for your first class?
You normally do not need pole heels for a standard beginner pole class. Many beginners start barefoot so they can focus on basic technique, balance and movement.
If you are attending a beginner heels class or an exotic pole class, the studio may recommend or require suitable pole heels. Always check the class information before attending. When learning to dance in heels, start slowly and follow the guidance of a qualified instructor.
What should you avoid wearing?
Avoid applying body lotion, oil or heavy moisturiser shortly before class. These products can make the skin and pole more slippery.
Remove jewellery that may catch on clothing, scratch the pole or become uncomfortable during movement. Avoid clothing with sharp zips, metal details or decorations that could interfere with training.
You should also avoid outfits that feel too tight, roll up during movement or require constant adjustment. Comfort and freedom of movement are more important than creating a perfect studio look for your first lesson.
Do beginners need a grip product?
Not every beginner needs a grip product immediately. Your instructor may first help you improve hand placement and technique. Grip needs also vary depending on your skin, the studio environment and the type of pole being used.
If you decide to use a pole grip, apply only a small amount and follow the instructions for that product. Ask your studio which products are permitted, as some studios have specific rules.
A simple first-class outfit
For your first pole dancing class, choose fitted shorts, a sports bra or close-fitting top, and bare feet unless the class description says otherwise. Bring knee pads if the session includes floorwork, and take a layer such as leggings or a sweatshirt to wear before and after training.
Most importantly, choose clothing that helps you feel comfortable and confident. Your outfit does not need to be perfect. As you gain experience, you will discover which cuts, materials and styles work best for your training.
